Description
Celebrating Europe Day 2024 in New Zealand! For the first time, Europe Day celebrations in New Zealand were hosted by the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister the Right Honourable Winston Peters MP. Guests were invited to the New Zealand Parliament to honour 'Schuman declaration', the founding document of the European Union presented in 1950, which laid the groundwork for cooperation, solidarity and lasting peace on the European continent. The event also celebrated the strong and growing partnership between the EU and NZ. The critical importance of New Zealand's relationship with the European Union was highlighted along with the shared values of human rights, democracy, and rule of law. Minister Peters pointed to current global challenges, including regional security in the Indo-Pacific and the war in Ukraine, underlining EU's leadership and the mutual support between NZ and the EU. The recent entry into force of the NZ-EU Free Trade Agreement and its potential economic benefits were also celebrated: ‘‘It is already delivering tariff savings, and it offers new markets for exporters and better opportunities for investors,’’ said Minister Peters. Co-host, His Excellency Lawrence Meredith, EU Ambassador to Aotearoa New Zealand, reiterated solidarity with Ukraine, EU-NZ Free Trade Agreement and the Pacific.
