GENDER Online Course 1: Basic training on Gender and Development

OBJECTIVE:
The course provides the basic knowledge and skills for a meaningful dialogue on gender mainstreaming in EU Development Cooperation.
The course is primarily targeted at staff involved in the management of EU development co-operation, in the Commission (in particular Delegation staff), in Member States as well as in partner organisations.
No previous knowledge on gender issues is required
CONTENTS:
- Introduction on “Why gender?”
- Historical outline, going from gender blindness, towards Women in Development (WID), and arriving at the current Gender and Development (GAD) approach. Explanation of the shift from ‘women’ to ‘gender’, which marks a new paradigm in development theory and a new challenge to address poverty and inequality caused by socially created relations between men and women.
- Legal and political commitments of the EU on gender equality including the EU Gender Action Plan.
DURATION:
Approximately 10 hours, including the readings, exercises and communication with tutors. This course will be launched 8th of March 2012 and will be open during the following period:
8 March - 9 April 2012
