Get in on the plan and celebrate International Day for Biodiversity!
Event details
Description
The theme of International Day for Biological Diversity 2024 is "Be part of the Plan", echoing a call to action for all stakeholders to join forces in halting and reversing the loss of biodiversity. Governments, indigenous communities, NGOs, businesses, and individuals are all urged to contribute to the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, also known as the Biodiversity Plan.
The European Union is actively championing the implementation of the Biodiversity Plan in partner countries, channelling support through various projects funded under the Neighbourhood, Development and International Cooperation Instrument – Global Europe (NDICI – Global Europe) and the Third Instrument for Pre-Accession (IPA III).
For example, at global scale, The Biodiversity and Protected Areas Management Programme (BIOPAMA) is assisting African, Caribbean and Pacific countries to address their priorities for improved management and governance of biodiversity and natural resources, including forests.
In sub-Saharan Africa, the NaturAfrica initiative is promoting biodiversity conservation and sustainable development, while addressing the increasing pressure on African ecosystems of population growth, climate change, conflicts over natural resources, and illegal exploitation of wildlife and forest products. The initiative spans 44 countries across East, West, Central, and Southern Africa, encompassing 33 transboundary and national landscapes. It covers an area of 3.19 million square kilometres, home to 59.86 million people, with a population density ranging from 1 to 308 people per square kilometre.
In Eastern Partnership countries, the “EU4Environment” Programme, launched in 2019, is helping Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine, preserve their natural capital and increase people’s environmental well-being. It supports environment-related actions, allowing for greener growth and implementing mechanisms to better manage environmental risks and impacts. One element of this support is extending and better managing the Emerald Network, which together with the EU’s Natura 2000, represents areas of special conservation interest established at the pan-European level to ensure long-term survival of species and halt land and habitat degradation.
And, recently launched, the SEMPA Project is bolstering Mediterranean biodiversity and Marine and Coastal Protected Areas for nature. The overall objective of this project is to protect the biodiversity of the Mediterranean Sea, which could be achieved through the setting up of new Marine Protected Areas in the Mediterranean and continuing to provide support on Integrated Monitoring and Assessment Programme (IMAP) implementation, with a particular focus on biodiversity and Nautical Information Systems, hydrography and coasts and interlinkages with climate change.
So, let's seize this moment to raise awareness, foster collaboration, and amplify our efforts in biodiversity conservation! Get inspired and learn more by reading these ‘Quick Tips: Working with Nature’. Together, we can make a difference and ensure a sustainable future for all life on Earth.
