Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative (GSSI) Brussels Stakeholder Update
Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative
Event details
Description
The Brussels Stakeholder Update will cover recent developments and what is next for GSSI. GSSI is a global platform and partnership of seafood companies, NGOs, experts, governmental and intergovernmental organizations. The mission of GSSI is to ensure confidence in the supply and promotion of certified seafood as well as to promote improvement in seafood certification schemes.
In 2013 GSSI introduced its concept of developing a non-competitive approach to solving the proliferation of eco-certification schemes based on the internationally accepted FAO Guidelines.
Much has happened since: GSSI launched its Global Benchmark Tool in late 2015. In 2016 certification schemes signed up to benchmarked and three achieved recognition. The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), Alaska RFM and the Iceland RFM Certification Program committed to the GSSI Benchmark Process and demonstrated credible certification in line with the UN FAO Guidelines.
