Description

This year’s World Environment Day campaign focuses on land restoration, desertification and drought resilience under the slogan “Our land. Our future. We are #GenerationRestoration.”
Nearly 40% of the planet’s land is degraded, directly impacting half of the world’s population and endangering roughly half of global GDP (US$44 trillion). Since 2000, the number and duration of droughts have surged by 29%. Without immediate action, droughts could affect over three-quarters of the world's population by 2050.
Land restoration plays a crucial role in addressing these challenges and is a key focus of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030). This initiative calls for the protection and revival of ecosystems worldwide, essential for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
In 2024, we mark the 30th anniversary of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification. The sixteenth session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 16) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) will convene in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, from December 2 to 13, 2024.
Let's join hands in advocating for land restoration and combating desertification to ensure a sustainable future for generations to come!
