World Oceans Day - 8 June
UN
Event details
Description
Under the theme "Awaken New Depths," this year's UN World Oceans Day encourages us to delve deeper into understanding and safeguarding our ocean ecosystems. Despite covering over 70% of our planet's surface, much of the ocean remains unexplored, highlighting the vast mysteries yet to be uncovered beneath the surface.
As we celebrate World Oceans Day, it's imperative to confront the harsh realities of anthropogenic damage to our oceans. Pollution, overfishing, climate change, and habitat destruction pose significant threats to marine biodiversity and ecosystems. Together, we must take action to mitigate these impacts and preserve the health and resilience of our oceans for future generations.
Let's make a difference for our oceans, whether it's reducing plastic waste, supporting sustainable fishing practices, or advocating for marine protected areas, every action counts in safeguarding the blue heart of our planet.
We invite you to review the Marine Strategy Framework Directive, a key pillar in the EU's efforts to fulfill its global commitments to marine protection and sustainable ocean management.
Together, let's celebrate World Oceans Day with a renewed commitment to preserving our ocean planet for generations to come.
