Do you work in human settlements, slum upgrading or housing provision? Become a member of this group to share and receive knowledge from other experts and practitioners in the field. The Urban Solutions: Slum Upgrading public group is part of the Urban Development Network.
Key topics of this group:
Our group will focus on slum upgrading as potential solution for the larger urban development framework. We will bring together various interpretations of incrementally developed settlements and try to understand them more as an approach or process. We will avoid looking at these settlements as "informal" or "slums" but rather as "habitats" that are developed by their inhabitants. We will explore topics such as incremental urbanism, self-built neighbourhoods, people's participation in development, etc.
What can you expect from this group?
The group aims to discuss and disseminate a novel understanding of incremental settlements which is different from the popular narrative. We will look into these settlements by dissecting the macro neighbourhood down to the micro-level housing typologies and dive deep into the socio-economical aspects to understand them better. We will look at them as an alternative form of urban development that has its own principles, frameworks, and processes that are largely driven by their inhabitants' needs. The group's knowledge-sharing process can lead to achieving a comprehensive understanding of incremental settlements that can help form better policy frameworks to address these neighbourhoods and urban development at large.
