The Lake Tanganyika Water Management regional project

The Lake Tanganyika Water Management (LATAWAMA) regional project has been a pivotal element of the TEI on Transboundary Water Management in Africa. The Lake Tanganyika Authority, the EU and ENABEL have synergized their efforts to implement an effective model of transboundary water cooperation.
LATAWAMA underscored during its first phase (2019-2024) the vital role of an Integrated Water Resources Management approach in effectively tackling pollution and erosion challenges. This collaborative effort significantly enhanced local community livelihoods by improving health standards, boosting fishing and tourism industries, which all played a critical role in the conservation of biodiversity.

The second phase has begun, the Tanganyika and Kivu Water Management programme (TAKIWAMA). This initiative is set to implement tailored pollution control measures in each participating country. Designed to align with the unique contexts on the ground, the programme is supporting circular economy principles for the benefit of the Lake Tanganyika Transport Corridor. This effort will not only boost regional integration among basin countries, but also fortify economic connections and integration.
