New study: Exile, journalism and gender in Central America
Library
Research Paper
This study focuses on journalists in Central America who are increasingly forced into exile due to repression, violence, and shrinking press freedom. From abroad, many continue their work, relying on transnational networks and support systems, though often under precarious conditions and far from their sources. Women journalists face additional gender-specific risks, including harassment and marginalisation, yet remain central to investigative reporting and human rights coverage. Despite the challenges, journalism in exile has become a crucial form of resistance, helping sustain independent information and democratic accountability in the region.
