PERP was designed to address the third of these challenges: how to keep children in school, once they have enrolled, in order that they acquire the basic competencies –literacy, numeracy, problem solving, social skills, and more –in order to continue learning and, later, to engage in productive work and participate actively and constructively in society.

The six PERP studies were designed to complement statistical data by collecting qualitative data to answer the question ‘why’ and to capture the range of dimensions and factors which contribute to dropout, on the one hand, and to retention, on the other.
