60 Local Journalists Trained to Report on Natural Resources and Green Growth in Nepal
News details
In Nepal’s efforts to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045 and shed its Least Developed Countries (LDC) status by 2026, the country will have to focus on sustainable natural resource management (NRM) and green growth, ensuring that development does not come at the cost of its climate and environment.
Internews’ Earth Journalism Network, through its Media for Inclusive Green Growth (MIGG) project, is enhancing the capacity of civil society and the media in Nepal to promote transparent, accountable governance and inclusive green growth.
Journalists play a crucial role in ensuring the public are engaged with these issues and have the information they need to hold policymakers accountable. To support their reporting on these issues over three years, EJN has partnered with the Nepal Forum of Environmental Journalists (NEFEJ) and the Antenna Foundation Nepal (AFN), a media development non-profit organization.
Sharada Magar, a journalist who attended a workshop in western Nepal’s Banke district said, “These issues very new to me. Learning how the revenue on natural resources is shared among three governments and how to track it will prove quite helpful in my news reporting.”
“Examples of good work carried out by civil society organizations and entrepreneurs had me considering new story angles on natural resources management. The knowledge gleaned from several experts boosted my confidence to do stories on climate change and green growth,” said Sushmita Bajagain, a participant from a workshop held in central Nepal’s Chitwan district.
