The Agricultural Economics Institute (IEA-APTA) of São Paulo, which operates under the State Secretariat for Agriculture and Supply, and AL-INVEST Verde will jointly strengthen the Rotas Rurais programme. The initiative aims to improve traceability and transparency across production chains in support of compliance with the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR).

São Paulo is the only Brazilian state that produces all seven commodities covered by the EUDR. For this reason, the cooperation between the IEA and AL-INVEST Verde seeks to ensure that small and medium-sized producers, as well as traditional communities, have access to the information and tools needed to adapt to the new requirements.

According to Priscilla Fagundes, Coordinator of Rotas Rurais and the IEA, the collaboration will expand the programme’s capabilities. “Rotas Rurais developed a traceability platform which, with support from the European Union through AL-INVEST Verde, will now help guide producers in São Paulo on how to move towards more sustainable production,” she said.

Andrea Monaco, Head of AL-INVEST Verde, highlighted that the partnership will strengthen the traceability tools already in place in São Paulo, both public and private. “We will integrate the information required by the EUDR to help ensure continued market access for products,” she stated, underlining the state’s strategic role. “São Paulo produces all the commodities affected by the European regulation. Supporting and safeguarding the continuity of trade flows between Brazil and the European Union is essential,” she added.

The cooperation includes several areas of work, including mapping the municipalities most exposed to EUDR requirements, linking Rotas Rurais with other traceability initiatives, and developing communication, awareness-raising and training campaigns.

Implemented by the Secretariat for Agriculture and Supply through the IEA, the Rotas Rurais programme created a digital rural addressing system based on Google Maps technology. The tool enables the precise identification of the entrance to each property and generates a location code that can be easily shared. This facilitates essential services such as security, healthcare and logistics, while also improving producers’ integration into more transparent and sustainable supply chains.
