Description
AL-INVEST Verde is the European Union–funded programme that promotes sustainable growth and job creation in Latin America. Its objective is to support the transition towards a low-carbon, resource-efficient and more circular economy by facilitating the implementation of sustainable production models within the framework of the Global Gateway strategy.
AL-INVEST Verde is structured around three components. Each component works on different thematic areas or strategic pillars:
Component 1. Innovation and Green Transition for SMEs: supports projects impacting thousands of producers and entrepreneurs through training, the adoption of sustainable practices, and responsible exports to the European Union.
The actions implemented under this component are focused on promoting deforestation-free value chains and the adoption of circular business models, fostering opportunities for knowledge exchange, capacity building, and the development of long-term partnerships. Component 1 has supported 71 projects, benefitting 15 countries and creating a strong network of 170 organisations from both Latin America and Europe working collaboratively.
These projects have so far positively impacted over 47,000 SMEs through actions such as training and technical assistance, aimed at helping them achieve their sustainability goals and increase their business volume. Component 2. Technical Assistance to the Public Sector in the region to foster sustainable value chains in compliance with environmental and labour standards. The actions implemented under this component are fully aligned with the EU Green Deal, Farm to Fork strategy and EUDR.
Component 2 collaborates with the MERCOSUR countries (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay), the Andean Community (Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru) and Chile. Additionally, it organizes dialogue cycles on sustainable value chains — including cattle and leather, coffee, cocoa, oil palm, timber, and soy — as well as a series of agri-food dialogues in collaboration with the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (ICCA).
Component 2 is also part of the Team Europe Initiative on Deforestation-free Value Chains. For more information, please visit the AL-INVEST Verde - International Partnerships - European Commission
Component 3. Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) for Sustainable Development: strengthens technical capacities in IPR for both intellectual property institutions and the productive sector, including mentorship programmes to enhance the value of sustainable local products, as well as knowledge exchange activities on trademarks, designs, plant variety licensing, and creative industries.
The actions implemented under this component seek to achieve greater use and effectiveness of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) in Latin America, particularly in the MERCOSUR countries. Its purpose is to expand and improve the use of IPRs to boost opportunities for research cooperation and stimulate competitiveness and sustainable innovation.
