“With the people of Sudan. Yesterday. Today. Tomorrow” – An EU Campaign reaffirms the support to the Sudanese population in times of war
Sudan has entered its second year of the conflict, becoming one of the largest humanitarian crises in the world forcing millions to abandon their homes and face hunger.
As stated by the EU High Representative/Vice President Mr Josep Borrell four days after the outbreak of the war in April 2023, “the EU reaffirms its steadfast support and solidarity with the people of Sudan, especially women and youth who led a peaceful revolution three years ago. Their aspirations and requests for a better future will not be forgotten”.
Throughout this dramatic year, the EU continued delivering on its promise by maintaining its support to the people of Sudan despite the conflict. Through the operations of EU implementing partners on the ground, including UN organisations, international and national civil society bodies, and EU agencies, ongoing projects were adapted to the challenging circumstances.
Additionally, new initiatives have been launched to address the evolving needs in areas like food security, support to displaced populations, health and nutrition.
The European Union Delegation to Sudan has launched a Campaign to showcase its assistance activities amidst the conflict and hoping to draw some attention to Sudan, the forgotten war.
The Campaign thus illustrates how EU implementing partners on the ground strive to deliver support to the populations. Partners such as FAO, WHO, UNEP, OHCHR, Danish Refugee Council, Save the Children, Danish Red Cross, Sudanese Red Crescent, Practical Action, Agence Française de Développement (AFD), Emergency, Concern International, GOAL, UNICEF, Penal Reform International and ZOA International are working alongside the EU all over the country, including in the most critical areas.
At present some of the sectors supported by EU funds are livelihoods, local food production, equitable access to water, basic services like education and health.
In the face of blatant disregard for fundamental human rights and international humanitarian law that has led to killings, looting, mass displacement, rape and other forms of sexual violence, the promotion of human rights and protection of vulnerable groups is high on the EU agenda. ; Implementing partners provide notably assistance to women in prison, stranded children, internally displaced people and refugees.
To counter hate speech, misinformation and polarisation, the EU and partners support the professionalism and independence of journalists and media houses.
