Description
The initial phase of the EU–Korea Green Partnership Programme established a strong basis for deepening climate cooperation and youth engagement. Key initiatives included support for the 14th University Student Academy on Climate Change, organised by the Korean National Assembly Forum on Climate Change, which empowered young Koreans to participate in global climate dialogue and attend COP29. A seminar on plastic waste solutions was also held in Busan in November 2024, in the lead-up to the global plastic treaty negotiations.
Public outreach was further enhanced through a pop-up event with a youth-led environmental NGO, aimed at raising awareness about plastic pollution ahead of the 5th session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-5) in November 2024.
The programme convened a seminar on Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), facilitating the exchange of progress under the Paris Agreement and discussions on the formulation of updated NDCs, thereby strengthening EU–Korea cooperation on climate action.
At the 10th Our Ocean Conference in Busan, the EU and Korea underscored their shared commitment to tackling marine plastic pollution by promoting circular economy solutions, through a side event that brought together policymakers and business representatives to foster dialogue and collaboration. The programme also extended its public engagement by supporting the 22nd Seoul International Eco Film Festival (SIEFF), co-hosting special talks with renowned European filmmakers and environmental activists.
These efforts collectively underscore the shared commitment of the EU and the Republic of Korea to inclusive dialogue, public engagement, and capacity building in the context of the green transition.
