Description
The Great East Road, T4 Highway, is a major Zambian highway linking the Eastern Province to the rest of the country and also the most important link between Zambia, Malawi and northern Mozambique.
The overall objectives of the Great East Road (T4) Rehabilitation project are to reduce poverty and to promote equitable economic growth and regional integration of Zambia.
The main actions to achieve the objectives are:
- the enhancement of the North-South and Nacala regional corridors that boost the Zambian economic system and make the country’s exports more competitive in the regional and international frame;
- the establishment of a safe and sustainable national public core road network with improved road safety, lower VOC, reduced maintenance costs and time savings on the GER (T4) in Zambia, which will also contribute to the objectives of ROADSIP II, that beneficiate the SME and the agricultural production located along the T4 route as well as the Luangwa Valley tourism complex.
The project includes the following civil works, tendered into 3 lots, representing the “European Package” of the Luangwa Bridge-Mwami border, financed by EU/EIB/AFD:
- Lot 1 Luangwa Bridge – Nyimba 98.93 km
- Lot 2: Sinda – Katete – Mtenguleni 95.50 km
- Lot 3: Mtenguleni – Chipata – Mwami border 50.39 km
The positive impacts to which the construction of the road contributed include:
- economic growth of towns along the road
- increased traffic volumes
- reduced travel times
- serve as an important access point for tourists and goods
The Great East Road (T4) Rehabilitation project contributed to establishment of a safe and sustainable national public core road network with improved road safety and improvement the regional connectivity. As a result of the project the rehabilitation of the road made a safe and reliable road network in Zambia, but also recorded significant impact at national and international level.
