Building long-term food security together: the contribution of the Global Food Security Portal (FSP)
Discussion details
The world’s growing population, scarce natural resources and climate change are all global challenges for food and nutrition security, particularly for developing countries. The global food crisis in 2007-2008 which resulted in very high food prices, showed that there is a need to respond to these challenges in a coordinated way at the global level while addressing at the same time, the country-specific, local needs.
Started in 2012, the Food Security Portal project, co-financed by the EU for a total amount of 4 EURM, was set up to address the above mentioned challenges, mainly by supporting the identification and implementation of appropriate policy actions that are effective at addressing food insecurity issues.
The Food Security Portal pools relevant, high quality data which are necessary to promote increased food security for the world’s poor and increased resilience of global food systems against food and financial crises. The main issues addressed by this project surround the availability of high-quality, up-to-date food security related information; the strengthening of food policy analysis capacity in developing countries; the closing of critical information gaps through cross-country learning and improved food security information monitoring and analysis systems; and the role of partnerships in the achievement of impact through research and policy action.
More details on the objectives and results of this project are summarized in the "FSP story" - see link
