Rio Markers tutorial

The European Union, like many other donors, uses Rio markers to keep track and provide statistical reports to the Development Assistance Committee of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD-DAC) on contributions to biological diversity, to combatting desertification, and to climate change mitigation and/or adaptation in developing countries.

Rio Markers were established in 1998 by the OECD-DAC as a set of indicators to measure policy compliance and financial contributions to the themes of the ‘Rio Conventions’, which took place at the 1992 Rio Conference on Environment and Development:

  1. the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC);
  2. the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD); and
  3. the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD).

OECD members, such as the European Union, are committed to report on the financial and technical resources devoted to assist developing countries in the implementation of these Conventions.
