UNESCO Social Media 4 Peace project launches a new global report on self-regulatory and regulatory framework to curb online harmful content

Within the project “Social Media 4 Peace" funded by the European Union, UNESCO has taken steps to contribute to the curbing of online disinformation and hate speech and is launching a comprehensive report examining legal frameworks and self-regulatory tools, including content moderation policies and practices of social media platforms, in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kenya, and Indonesia. Focusing on these pilot countries of the project enabled the gathering of local knowledge from three diverse political, social, cultural, and linguistic backgrounds.

The report, entitled “Local lessons for global practices,” collects findings from various research efforts conducted by local and international experts and stakeholders, including ARTICLE 19, under the UNESCO project. Throughout this research, the experts engaged with around 150 local stakeholders from the three countries through interviews, surveys, and consultations, including the CSOs, media outlets, national regulators, and representatives of groups in situation of marginalization or vulnerability.
