The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization is a specialized agency of the United Nations. Its purpose is to contribute to peace and security by promoting international collaboration through education, science, culture and communication.
UNESCO and the European Union share the same values and goals, namely the promotion of peace and mutual understanding, and the recognition of human rights and fundamental freedoms as cornerstones of international cooperation and development.
On 16 February 2011, the UNESCO Liaison Office in Brussels was inaugurated in order to develop and strengthen cooperation with the European Union. Under the direct supervision of UNESCO's Director-General Irina Bokova, the Office promotes UNESCO's mandate, programmes and activities, and works to strengthen relations with the European Union.
On 16 October 2012, UNESCO and the European Union reinforced their partnership by singing a Memorandum of Understanding with the objectives of enhancing cooperation of mutual interest, encouraging dialogue and knowledge sharing, and improving best practices between organizations.
Today, the partnership between the European Union is growing and we are working together all over the world, through a reinforced dialogue between EU Delegations, UNESCO Field Offices and UNESCO's specialized institutes, to address local, regional and global challenges.
