COP21, Paris: Launch of the Covenant of Mayors for Sub-Saharan Africa, 08.12.2015

At the 'Flagship event on Cities and Regions: The Globalisation of the Covenant of Mayors' side event during COP21 in Paris, the European Commission Vice-President, Mr Maroš Šefčovič, announced the launch of the Covenant of Mayors for Sub-Saharan Africa. The launch event, which preceded two other roundtables on mitigation and adaptation challenges, was hosted by Mr Šefčovič and the Director General for International Cooperation and Development, Mr Fernando Frutuoso de Melo. Mr Šefčovič and the President of the European Committee of the Regions, Mr Markku Markkula, delivered opening addresses.
The launch event was marked by a dedicated panel discussion on the 'Covenant of Mayors for Sub-Saharan Africa: a new window of opportunity for energy access and energy efficiency', chaired by Mr Frutuoso de Melo and with the following panellists participating:
- Ms Johanna Rolland, Mayor of Nantes and President, Nantes Métropole, France
- Mr James Nxumalo, Mayor of Durban, South Africa
- Mr Jonathan Mueke, Deputy Governor and Head of Delegation, Nairobi City County, Kenya
- Ms Célestine Ketcha Courtes, Mayor of Bangangté, Cameroon
