Webinar on Copernicus Programme (Digital and Earth Observation Data) dedicated to the Staff in the EU Delegations in the Pacific

Training objectives

The webinar aims to raise awareness on the EU Space Programme and its application areas. The purpose is to inform the EUDs staff on the benefit of the programmes for their activities, as well as providing concrete examples on the use of the Earth Observation data, to be applied when designing new cooperation actions.

Content

The European Union’s Copernicus Programme offers free and open access to vast amounts of global data from Earth Observation satellites, alongside ground-based, airborne, and seaborne measurement systems to help service providers, public authorities, international organisations, NGOs and citizens fight against climate change, improve emergency response, protect our oceans and manage our planet’s resources sustainably.

The webinar will include three modules:

MODULE 1: Analysis of study cases and practical examples in all areas relevant to the Pacific.

  • General presentation of the several application areas of Copernicus Programme;
  • Study cases for each application area of EO services and examples of development of new application ideas, particularly in the following areas:
    • Climate change adaptation
    • Marine, coastal & mangroves monitoring
    • Monitoring of fishing operations / marine security
    • Land cover / use change – (from) agriculture (to residential & industrial use overtime), forest monitoring;
    • Post-disaster impact assessments, including on economic activity (e.g. damage of cultivated areas or blocked access to areas of economic interest).
    • Relevant use cases relying on GNSS (namely in the area of marine search and rescue)

MODULE 2: Copernicus implementing entities / tools to support the EU Delegations:

  • Presentation of the different roles between Copernicus implementing entities and the EUDs, fields of intervention and support, as well as contact points, in order to facilitate their interaction;
  • Focus on services with products that have global coverage (e.g. CMEMS, CAMS, C3S, CEMS) and clear value proposition vis-à-vis local and regional needs (e.g. disaster risk management, monitoring of marine resources, etc.);
  • Presentation of the three Copernicus Relays existing in the region; the Pacific GIS & Remote Sensing Council PGRSC (Fiji), and the two private sector companies BlueCham and INSIGHT (New Caledonia).
  • Presentation of Copernicus Support Office (support@copernicus.eu), providing assistance to EUDs, Copernicus Relays & Copernicus Academy Members.

MODULE 3: General overview of Copernicus programme (main features, operational services and mission) and user engagement:

  • Copernicus Programme data and information services and how these can benefit local and regional authorities, decision makers and downstream users (private sector, academia, CSO, etc);
  • Main advantages of Copernicus: free, open, and full accessibility;
  • Focus on practical use for private sector: how to use already available/develop commercial applications based on freely available data;
  • Focus on practical use for public authorities: develop added-value information services/products tailored to specific, local needs;
  • Focus on practical use for decision-makers: monitoring of policies and evidence-based decisions.

Target audience
