Achievements and successes for scaling up experiences in the "forests, biodiversity and ecosystems" sector
This study focuses on analyzing the experiences, initiatives, and methodologies of projects in the Forests, Biodiversity, and Ecosystems (BBE) sector of the Euroclima program, with the objective of identifying the conditions for their replicability and scaling up.
The study was coordinated and implemented by the Expertise France team and German Cooperation (GIZ) within the framework of the Euroclima program. BBE projects seek to strengthen the resilience of vulnerable populations and ecosystems, contributing to climate change adaptation and mitigation, the generation of green jobs, and the fight against biodiversity loss in the region.
The study is based on a set of criteria and does not simply seek to identify ""good practices"" or ""models,"" but rather to understand the learning processes and the context in which actions are developed to determine the possibilities for expansion or reproduction. Two forms of scaling are distinguished: scaling up (extension to a larger geographical scale from the same center) and replication (reproduction with adaptations in a different location).
Among the identified success factors and scaling conditions are: forest management models (such as integrated forest and livestock management and the use of non-timber resources), the strengthening of value chains, income generation, the contribution to public policies at the national and local levels (highlighting the livelihoods approach), strategic water management (with initiatives such as water sowing and harvesting), community appropriation of methodologies (such as Farmer Field Schools - ECAS+), and the integration of the territorial rights approach.
Key words: Climate change, Forests, Biodiversity, Ecosystems, Scaling up, Replication, Value chains, Forest management, Public policies, Water.
