Kigali Action Plan - Water and Sanitation
The "Kigali Action Plan" aims at accelerating water and sanitation goals across Africa in extending "water and sanitation services to at least 5 Mo people in 10 AU MS”, mobilizing “at least 50 Mo€ to support direct action at community level”. The 10 countries targeted are: Burundi, Central African Republic, Chad, Lesotho, Liberia, Madagascar, Mali, Mauritania, Sierra Leone and South Sudan.
In January 2014 the African Union Assembly designated President P. Kagame to provide leadership, in 2015, in the implementation of activities aimed at redressing deficiencies in the provision of water supply and hygiene and sanitation services in Africa, particularly at rural household level. The 2011 Africa Water Sector Report to the AU Assembly indeed indicated that Africa will miss the MDGs targets for water supply and sanitation by gaps of 16% and 22% respectively.
