Malawi warms to sustainable stoves – in pictures
28 March, 2013 - In this article from the Guardian.com, Lucy Lamble writes:
"Malawi, a relatively small African country with a growing population and a high dependency on wood for fuel, is addressing its energy use. An estimated 99% of household energy comes from biomass. Due to deforestation, women often have to travel far to collect fuel for cooking, while communities can be more vulnerable to flooding and drought. Concern Universal ran a four-year project, funded by the EU, in Msamala, part of Balaka district in southern Malawi, with the aim of improving sustainable access to energy. Through the use of carbon credits, it has become self-financing."
