The European Union supports the efforts of partner countries to preserve their forests and to contribute to sustainable, inclusive economies and societies. The EU is proposing to partner countries to work together towards Forest Partnerships (FP).These represent political long-term commitments aiming at a comprehensive, holistic and integrated approach to protect, restore and ensure the sustainable use of forests. Each Forest Partnership has a dedicated space in this group. Through the Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT) actions, the EU contributes to combatting illegal logging and strengthening forest governance while encouraging sustainable trade in legal timber. The keystone of this plan are Voluntary Partnership Agreements (VPA), which are legally binding trade agreements ratified by the EU and timber-producing countries. For an overview of the scope of EU Forest Action, explore the multi country programmes and country pages. In the Sustainable Forests for the Future group you can exchange experiences, good practices and information on sustainable forestry. We encourage each of you to contribute with your voice by posting documents, pictures, videos, promoting events and initiating discussions.

Illegal logging is a global problem with significant negative economic, environmental, and social impacts. Partner countries around the world, including in the Latin America region, have taken action and introduced measures to tackle illegal logging and mitigate its environmental and socio-economic repercussions. In this process, the EU stands as a partner via numerous interventions in forest-rich countries of Latin America, with Guatemala exemplifying these efforts.
