WCEF2024 Accelerator Session: Ukraine’s circular reconstruction
DG NEAR and UNIDO
Event details
Description
Ukraine suffers extensive devastation, with industries and buildings in urban areas significantly damaged due to shelling. The reconstruction of infrastructure and the revitalization of the economy demand a forward-thinking approach that prioritizes minimizing environmental impact. By integrating circular economy principles from the outset, it's feasible to reduce construction waste, mitigate economic decline, and create new opportunities. Despite challenges, the restoration of Ukraine represents a chance for rapid modernization, especially with the backing of the EU in advancing environmental sustainability.
The session aimed at:
- Discussing opportunities and challenges to ensure circularity when rebuilding Ukraine, with focus on economic recovery and infrastructure
- Highlighting international practices and circular solutions for the circular reconstruction of Ukraine
WATCH the wrap up video:
This session highlighted successful examples of the circular economy implemented in practice and facilitated dialogue with construction professionals on the crucial prerequisites for sustainable rebuilding.
The hybrid session was jointly organised by European Commission Directorates General for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Negotiations and United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO).
The EU is supporting Ukraine to build a brighter future on a foundation of environmental sustainability – with funding but also with technical and legislative capacity, which is provided by the UNIDO and some other organizations.
This event was an accelerator session at the World Circular Economy Forum 2024.
