Percentage of the population using improved drinking-water services

Additional Information

The percentage of population using an improved drinking water source is a proxy for the use of safe drinking water. An improved drinking water source, by nature of its construction and design, is likely to protect the source from outside contamination, in particular from faecal matter. Improved drinking water sources include: - Piped water into dwelling, plot or yard - Public tap/stand pipe - Tube well/borehole - Protected dug well - Protected spring and - Rainwater collection On the other hand, unimproved drinking water sources are: - Unprotected drug well, - Unprotected spring, - Cart with small tank/drum, - Tanker truck, - Surface water (river, dam, lake, pond, stream, canal, irrigation channel ad any other surface water), and - Bottled water (if it is not accompanied by another improved source).

Proportion of population using safely managed drinking water services disaggregated by residence (urban/ rural), socioeconomic status (wealth, affordability), inequality (subnational, gender, disadvantaged groups, etc.) (SDG 6.1.1., GERF 1.30)

Additional Information

SDG Indicator 6.1.1. Tier I. Proportion of population using safely managed drinking water services is currently being measured by the proportion of population using an improved basic drinking water source which is located on premises, available when needed and free of faecal (and priority chemical) contamination. ‘Improved’ drinking water sources include: piped water into dwelling, yard or plot; public taps or standpipes; boreholes or tube wells; protected dug wells; protected springs; packaged water; delivered water and rainwater.
