Project: Greening Economies in the Eastern Neighbourhood (2013-2016)

What is this project about?

The “Greening Economies in the Eastern Neighbourhood” programme (2013-2016, EUR 12.5 million) supports Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine in their efforts to move towards a green economy by decoupling growth from environmental degradation and resource depletion, and by adopting sustainable consumption and production. The project is implemented by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in co-operation with the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, the United Nations Environment Programme and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization. More specifically, the project contributes to:

  • Mainstreaming sustainable consumption and production into national development plans, legislation and regulatory frameworks;
  • Promoting the use of the Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) and Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) as planning tools;
  • Achieving a shift to green economy through the adaptation and adoption of sustainable consumption and production practices and techniques in selected economic sectors (manufacturing, agriculture, food production and processing, construction).

Accordingly, the project is structured around three components:

  • governance and financing tools;
  • SEA and EIA implementation;
  • demonstration projects.
