AU-EU Workshop: Sharing Experience on the Informal Economy - 10-11 March 2011, Nairobi

The workshop – co-organised by the European Commission and the African Union Commission – was a two-day event with the participation of about 60 experts from AU and EU governments, civil society including social partners, international organisations such as ILO, UNICEF, World Bank, Regional Economic Committees and other experts in the area. 

The objective of workshop was to contribute on how to implement the AU Social Policy Framework and the AU Programme on Upgrading the Informal Economy and the Productivity Agenda for Africa through an exchange on national, regional or local social protection initiatives/schemes in the formal and informal economy were discussed.

Background:

The Joint Africa-EU Strategy and its first Action Plan were adopted in Lisbon in 2007 and reviewed in Tripoli in 2010; it provides a long-term framework for Africa-EU relations. The second action plan, adopted at the Africa-EU Summit in November 2011, specifies a number of proposals for the period 2011-2013, structured along eight partnerships of which one is on Migration, Mobility and Employment (MME).See further information on the Joint Africa-EU Strategy on the following website: www.africa-eu-partnership.org
