Nutrition seminar 19-21 March - "front-loading" session 2 : comprehensive understanding of ‘malnutrition’
This week, we would like to draw your attention to material that will inform the discussions on Day 1, Monday 19 March.
The day's agenda flows from a strong grounding in a comprehensive understanding of ‘malnutrition’, that encompasses stunting, wasting, micronutrient deficiencies and overweight/obesity.
From there, we will consider the implications for multi-sectoral planning and the importance of donor coordination in support of such plans.
We have selected 3 brief papers for your attention:
1. Levels and Trends in Child Malnutrition, 2017. http://www.who.int/nutgrowthdb/jme_brochoure2017.pdf
2. The Double Burden of Malnutrition - Policy Brief. WHO 2017 http://apps.who.int/iris/bitstream/10665/255413/1/WHO-NMH-NHD-17.3-eng.pdf?ua=1
3. Summary of the 2017 Global Nutrition report: https://www.globalnutritionreport.org/files/2017/11/Report_Summary_2017.pdf
We strongly encourage you to read and consider these in the context of your own work, so that we can have informed discussions when together in Brussels.
We also have a video that you might wish to scan, of two presentations made by WHO in Brussels last year. Of particular relevance for us are the 17 minutes of a presentation by Francesco Branca (Director of the Department of Nutrition for Health and Development) on how WHO is tackling malnutrition in all its forms (this runs from 8:25 until 25:53). There is then a second presentation by João Breda, Head of WHO’s Europe office, on the situation of Nutrition and Diets in Europe.

As we said last week, we will be sharing such key reading materials every week in the run up to the Seminar, so that we can all participate with a common understanding of the main subjects of the agenda, and thereby allow us to make maximum use of the opportunity to interact and learn more deeply from each-other.
We encourage you to use this platform, Capacity4Dev, to comment on the reading, share views/thoughts and interact with us over the coming weeks.
