Regional & Urban Resilience
Description
Nowadays, cities are more complex and considered flexible, dynamic, and integrated systems. The efficiency and performance of the city system are affected by climate change, which is already causing severe impacts on urban life – from overheating and flooding to increased migration and economic disruption.
Urban sprawl leads to deforestation and arable land loss drivers, and urban areas often constrain vegetated and naturally drained areas, limiting the application of Nature-based Solutions.
On the other hand, the development of Green Cities programs and projects in cities in low- and middle-income countries can deepen urban development and urban resilience links with EU objectives: Green Deal, INTPA's Strategic Plan (i.e., Climate Change, Environment, and Energy) and the Global Gateway (i.e., Green Alliances and Partnerships).
A climate-sensitive planning approach recognizes that the design and planning of cities directly influence climatic comfort in an urban environment. As stated in the IPCC (2022), integrated spatial planning with adaptation mitigation solutions could reduce GHG emissions between 23% and 26% by 2050 and have cascading effects across transport, energy, buildings, land use, and behavior.
The Regional and Urban Resilience thematic area will share knowledge and resources with experts and practitioners on implementing the following focal area strategies: biodiversity, climate change adaptation and mitigation, land degradation, NbS, and waste.
Synergies are identified with the following Urban Knowledge Hub thematic areas: Urban Finance (1), Solid Waste Management (2), and Water and Sanitation (7).
Knowledge Products implemented under the DG INTPA F4 are shared on this web page.
