Water&Sanitation

Description

Rapid urbanization, limited institutional, financial, and technical resources, and inadequate infrastructure often lead to water scarcity, pollution, and poor sanitation practices.

Ensuring that everyone has access to safe and affordable drinking water, including investments in infrastructure and sanitation facilities, protection and restoration of water-related ecosystems, and improving water-use efficiency to reduce water stress, are considered milestone strategies to plan resilient and livable cities. It requires an integrated urban development associated with sustainable solutions, collaborative efforts, and the need to ensure access to urban services, including safe water access and improved sanitation. On the other hand, while cities fully develop their water systems, buildings need to connect to the system to ensure full access for individuals, households, businesses, and industries.

Protecting key water sources and associated ecosystems is crucial to ensure water supply and water quality.  Key water sources and ecosystem protection should be included in land use planning and policy efforts and the water and sanitation system development.

The Water and Sanitation thematic area will share knowledge and resources with experts and practitioners in the development of policy strategies in promoting integrated urban water management, WASH, promoting watershed management and water source protection in cities.

Knowledge Products implemented under the DG INTPA F4 are shared on this web page.
