Regional Economic Corridors

Description

The European Union launched the Global Gateway in 2021, the EU's strategy to invest in smart, clean and secure infrastructure in digital, energy, and transport sectors while bolstering global health, education, and research systems. Global Gateway initiative is ambitious and seeks to mobilize up to €300 billion for sustainable projects. Central to the Global Gateway in Africa is facilitating the development of 12 strategic economic corridors to enhance high potential value-chains and economic integration through regional connectivity catalyzed by high-impact investments. While the Global Gateway's strategic focus is on transportation, enhanced connectivity, and trade facilitation, functional and sustainable urban areas will be central to harnessing the development potential of the corridors.

Cities will play a central role in shaping future consumption and production patterns and transitioning to climate neutrality and resilience, sustainable mobility, zero pollution, and the sustainable use of natural resources and ecosystems. The city's design and planning should promote strong cooperation among regions, cross-border areas, and cities in African countries.

The Regional and Economic Corridor thematic area share knowledge and resources with experts and practitioners on implementing the following focal area strategies: economic opportunities along the regional corridors of medium and large cities; city-region connectivity, competitiveness and value–-chains; governance and institutional policy support; spatial planning, land use management and urban infrastructure; regional and public transport system in small and medium-sized cities; and environmental sustainability, climate change and managing disaster risk in cities.

Knowledge Products implemented under the DG INTPA F4 are shared on this web page.
