Commonwealth DSG Maharaj addresses students from the College of Micronesia
On Wednesday 7 September 2016, the Commonwealth Secretariat’s Deputy Secretary General Mr. Deodat Maharaj addressed 40 students and staff of the College of Micronesia on the topic of “Small States in a changing world” at the Learning Resources Center in Palikir, Pohnpei, Federated States of Micronesia (FSM).
The activity was facilitated by the Commonwealth Secretariat Political Division and Mr. Jean Bertrand Azapmo, National Trade Adviser for the Hub & Spokes II Programme, assigned to the FSM. Among participants was the President of the College of Micronesia, Dr. Joseph Daisy. DSG Maharaj discussed the main challenges facing Small States, in particular Small Islands, which include remoteness and high transportation and trade costs, vulnerability to natural disasters and economic shocks, brain-drain, and limited capacity to effectively participate in international trade. He highlighted the Commonwealth’s support to Small States and that FSM is benefiting from its assistance under the Hub & Spokes II Programme for enhancing the trade development capacity, which is a joint programme of the EU (lead donor), ACP Secretariat, Commonwealth Secretariat and l’Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie.
