The Challenges for Child Rights Mainstreaming in the New Aid Modalities (Lessons Learned from Gender Mainstreaming)

While there is international commitment to child rights across the globe, in practice it may be challenging to mainstream child rights in the context of locally-driven, multi-stakeholder supported national development plans or sector-wide approaches. Host governments, donors and civil society may have different levels of understanding, commitment and capacity to uphold child rights, while many competing agendas and interests may be vying for limited public resources.

There are few lessons learned to date on child rights mainstreaming in the new aid modalities given that it is a relatively new field. Gender Equality Mainstreaming (GEM), however, can provide many relevant lessons learned on opportunities for child rights mainstreaming in the New Aid Modalities.

The next slide draws on lessons learned from over a decade of gender mainstreaming in PRSPs, SWAPs and budget support.

These lessons and best practices have been adapted and applied to child rights mainstreaming from OECD/DAC, November 2011, ‘Findings of the Gender Equality Module of the 2011 Paris Declaration Monitoring Survey’.
