02-05 Exchanges with the African Energy Commission of the African Union on EIS
The Department of Energy and Mines of the ECOWAS Commission and the African Energy Commission of the African Union (AFREC) held a three-day meeting from the 2nd to 4th May 2023 with the objective of strengthening their collaboration, specifically on Energy sector statistics.
During the meeting, Energy Information systems (EIS) of both institutions were presented and discussed. The African Energy Commission (AFREC), a specialized agency of the African Union has equally put in place an Energy Information System which contains data from all the 55 members States of the Union, including the ECOWAS Member States. The two institutions mutually shared their experiences, ideas and best practices. While stressing the relevance of Energy Information Systems for the design, financing, implementation and monitoring of effective and coherent energy strategies and policies, the two institutions have agreed to formalize their collaboration with a Memorandum of Understanding. The MoU will highlight the need for mutual assistance in data collection, for joint capacity building projects and for joint mobilization of resources.
