16-05 Adoption of the Electricity Code and Updated Energy Policy
On May 16, 2023, the Joint Committee of the ECOWAS Parliament on Energy & Mines, Telecommunications & Information Technology, and Infrastructure have adopted the Ecowas Electricity Code and the updated Ecowas Energy Policy among other regional texts which were submitted for their perusal and endorsement.
Both the Ecowas Electricity Code and the Updated Energy Policy have been previously reviewed by ECOWAS experts and Ministers in charge of energy. The experts met on 22nd and 23rd March 2023 in Bissau and the ministers’ meeting was conducted on 24th March 2023 at the same venue. At the end of their meeting, the Ministers validated both documents and recommended their adoption by the ECOWAS decision-making bodies. The endorsement by the Parliament is an integral part of ECOWAS institutional decision-making process relating to the adoption of community acts.
The Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government adopted by Supplementary Act, the updated ECOWAS Energy Policy in its Ordinary Session of July 9th 2023, held in Bissau, Guinea Bissau.
The ECOWAS Energy Information System (ECOWAS EIS) was officially launched during the Ministerial meeting, held on the 24th of March 2023 in Bissau.
