ECOWAS Electricity Code
The ECOWAS region faces several structural challenges including production deficit, t
echnical losses, high utility costs, uncoordinated renewable energy investments, governance issues and a weak regulatory framework of the sector. To provide a sustainable response to these problems and improve the population's access to modern, sustainable, reliable, and affordable electricity, ECOWAS has chosen to create an open and competitive regional electricity market.
To this end, an ECOWAS Electricity Code has been agreed with the overall objective of establishing common and specific general principles for the ECOWAS region's electricity sub-sector and harmonising national legislation. The Electricity Code contains 75 articles divided into 13 chapters.
