Clima East presents recommendations on the improvement of the national GHG inventory in forestry and harvested wood products

The workshop “Improving the national reporting of Ukraine on carbon stock and emissions in the forestry sector and harvested wood products” was held at the Aarhus Centre of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Ukraine on 26 January 2017. The event was co-oragnised by the Ministry and the EU-funded Clima East Policy Project.

Ukraine, as a Party to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Kyoto Protocol, annually prepares and submits to the UNFCCC Secretariat its National Inventory of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and absorptions. The land use, land use change and forestry (LULUCF) sector is an important component of the National GHG Inventory, which includes, among others, the harvested wood products category.

The results of two Expert Facility assignments – one focused on the GHG inventory in forestry and the other aimed at improvements in harvested wood product accounting – were presented and discussed at the workshop. The leading sectoral experts involved by Clima East project presented corresponding analyses and recommendations. They also noted that substantial improvements of GHG inventory in forestry are closely linked to the state of national forest inventory in general. They suggested a development of an integrated forest inventory system for Ukraine on a modern scientific and technological basis, which would combine current forest inventory and planning, forest monitoring and national GHG inventory. The experts pointed out that GHG Inventory in harvested wood products would significantly benefit from the enhancement of collaboration and information exchange between the Ministry of Ecology and the State Statistics Service of Ukraine.

The workshop was attended by representatives of the Climate Policy Department of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, Budgetary Institution “National Center for GHG Emission Inventory”, State Statistics Service, State Forest Resources Agency, and other organisations related to forestry.
