PRESS RELEASE: Georgia and European Union discuss working together to implement the Paris Climate Agreement

Tbilisi, 2 February 2017 – The EU-funded Clima East programme, which provides support to the Eastern Neighbourhood Policy countries to be better prepared to deal with climate change impacts, organised a workshop attended by representatives of the Georgian Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources.

The workshop brought together high-level delegates from Europe and Georgia to discuss the implementation of Paris Agreement, in particular how it affects the industry, agriculture, waste and building/residential sectors. Participating in the workshop were Mr. Carlo Natale, Deputy Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Georgia as well as representatives of the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Climate Action and the Clima East project.

The workshop offered an opportunity to reach governmental authorities and other stakeholders (business community, civil society and academia) in order to enhance their common understanding of the opportunities and the challenges that the implementation of the Paris Agreement and Georgia’s 15% reduction target creates for the country’s economy and society. In particular, the conference discussed options for coordinating sectoral policies and measures and ensuring that they bring national development on a low-emission and climate-resilient pathway.

The EU-funded Clima East project has so far supported Georgia in international climate change cooperation by organising regional workshops for climate change negotiators, supporting a stakeholder consultation workshop on Georgia’s draft Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDCs) as well as providing provides technical assistance in the development and implementation of effective national policies and planning for climate change.
