1.3 Is this economic growth inclusive?

To highlight the actual impact of the VC development on poverty alleviation and its potential as a driver for economic development, the economic and social experts highlight how the VC organisation and governance involve the various stakeholders and how the incomes and employment generated are distributed among social groups (figure 1). The value chain specific impact on vulnerable groups such as subsistence-oriented farmers, smallholders, women, youth, and marginalised people (landless rural workers, minority communities…) is closely documented.

Figure 1: Overview of the analysis of inclusiveness

Main items expected are the components of the value added and the distribution of income across actors (figure 2), and job creation (in number of jobs at the different stages of the VC). The participation of the various stakeholders in the VC governance is also analysed (horizontal and vertical coordination and social capital).

Core questions:

CQ2.1. How is income distributed across actors of the VC?

CQ2.2. What is the impact of the governance systems on income distribution?

CQ2.3. How is employment distributed across the VC?
