9. The Agri-Food Value Chain Analysis Software (AFA)

The Agri-Food Value Chain software (AFA) has been developed by CIRAD with the financial support of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and later of the European Union through the Value Chain Analysis for Development (VCA4D) project.

AFA is a tool designed to assist economists in the financial and economic analysis of agri-food value chains. AFA works as a calculator that facilitates consistency and reliability in the computation of indicators. It is useful for storing, transferring and updating data describing activities of actors in a value chain. It allows to model complex value chains, and to store data for multiple analyses (update, comparison of scenarios). This allows for better interpretation and analysis of indicators and economic data.

The AFA software helps to organize physical input and product volume flows as well as economic associated data in a systematic way when analysing value chains. It is a solid tool for ensuring a coherent price system and a flow mechanism that allows for a balance of physical supplies and utilisations.

AFA supports economists in producing the following outputs and indicators:

•          Mapping of the value chains – functional analysis table and graph

•          Product flow matrix and graph

•          Financial and economic indicators for each actor and for the whole value chain

•          Governance of the value chain and equity

•          Value chain’s induced effect for the value-added generation

•          International viability of the value chain (Parity price and Social Price)

•          Job creation
