Haiti: SPHaïtiLab

SPHaïtiLab, Appui au Laboratoire National de Santé Publique pour améliorer la politique nationale de laboratoires en Haïti

Haiti pays a heavy price for communicable and non-communicable diseases. The most frequent pathologies are diarrhoea, respiratory infections, malnutrition, HIV / AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. In addition, some diseases that are controllable by vaccination are still present in the morbidity and mortality table. This is tetanus, diphtheria and human rabies. Some of them require a diagnostic laboratory confirmation.

What:

SPHaïtiLab : Appui au Laboratoire National de Santé Publique pour améliorer la politique nationale de laboratoires en Haïti” was born following a request by the National Public Health Laboratory (LNSP) of Haiti who plays a unifying role in this project. Numerous exchanges took place at national level and within the consortium to define the activities and expected results of the project. The overall objective of the project is to contribute to improving the health of the people of Haiti through analysis and strategic advice on laboratory policy.

The specific objectives of the project are:

  1. To Provide the Ministry of Health and stakeholders in the sector:

    with strategic advice based on evidence and analysis of the local situation;

    with support for decision making and the development of a national laboratory policy

  2. To strengthen the expertise, knowledge and resources of the National Laboratory of Public Health of Haiti.

    The National Laboratory of Public Health is a public health key player in the country that links between research in public health, policy development, training, diagnosis and monitoring of diseases. Although it has proven itself as reference laboratory and for laboratory professionals training, it needs to be supported to better perform its other functions. Laboratory services are crucial for the implementation and development of programs for prevention and care to the population. The role of laboratories is becoming increasingly important in view of the expansion of prevention programs and support for certain diseases including AIDS, Malaria, TB and the Epidemiological Surveillance.
