Fartun Mohamed Awil is an 18 year-old girl from Eyl in Puntland. She lives together with her parents and 8 siblings. She finished her primary school last year in 2015. But even though her father is one of the best tailors in Eyl district, Fartun could not continue secondary education because her family does not have enough money. “My father is the only bread winner of the family. My two elder brothers are in form two and my young sister is finishing her primary education in 2016 so I had to stop because my father couldn’t afford to pay my secondary school fees”, she explains.

As she is one of the many out-of-school youth in Puntland, Fartun was selected for the first round of TVET training for the Nugal Empowerment for Better Livelihood Project funded by the European Union and implemented by World Vision. She is currently one of 12 students who learn computer skills at UGBAD vocational center in Eyl.

“Since I don’t have a chance to join secondary school, I have chosen computer skills to substitute my secondary education. It is a new technology which has both practical and academic aspects. I also wanted to learn something else than the rest of my family members who are all tailors. It was always my dream profession. I love it and I always like to practice and get better. Unfortunately, I don’t have my own personal computer but I hope one day I will be able to buy my own computer”, says Fartun.

“When I joined the computer class I did not know anything about computers but now I can work with excel, make some calculation, enter data and make charts and graphs, make some word art design and so on. I believe computer training will equip me with valuable skills so that I will be able to find an office job and earn some money. Then I can invest that money in my education and will hopefully become an IT expert in the future in-shaa Allah”, concludes Fartun.
